Due to its characteristic looks, this lamp was known as a ‘Turtle lamp’. A wide range of these lamps were produced by the East German manufacturer Elektroinstallation Oberweimar (EOW), and used in a large variety of industries. Its typically industrial design comprises an cast-aluminium body with a spring-mounted ceramic E27 socket, fitted with a splash-proof glass cover. The Sea Turtle is distinguished by its clicked-on protective case, and the mounting brackets by which it can be installed easily to wall or ceiling.
ORIGIN
The lamp was salvaged from a large military complex. As a ‘row’ of Sea Turtles, the lamps were mounted in one of the main barracks on the terrain. After the reunification of Germany in the early nineties this complex lost its significance, and was abandoned soon after.
RESTORATION
All our lights are restored by hand with the greatest care. As unique piece of heritage, we seek to preserve the light’s authentic appearance. We present the lamp in it’s original finish, or re-finish the light in it’s original color. The lamp has been completely rewired to current standards, and fully assembled and tested to European Legislation, We hope that it may be preserved for many centuries to come.
DETAILS
The Sea Turtle can be supplied with either halogen or LED bulb. Standard the light comes with 2.0m long cable. Other lengths for cable are possible on request, please specify in comments at check out. The Sea Turtle will be accompanied by its passport, documenting the history and origin of the lamp. 110 volt options, US & Canada wiring, and other specialties are available.
